GET OUT: Weekend Events Preview Aug. 17-19

With a variety of entertainment venues and restaurants in the area, there's no reason to spend the weekend at home. We've put together a list of fun things to do in the area.

WHERE/WHEN: Sidewalk Prophets, recipient of a Dove Award for Best New Artist, will perform in concert at River of Life Christian Center, 6605 Krycul Ave., Riverview, Friday, Aug. 17 at 7:30 p.m.

WHY GO: The band will perform songs from its latest release, "These Simple Truths," which also received a Dove nomination for Pop/Contemporary Album of the Year. Joining Sidewalk Prophets at the Aug. 17 concert will be The Band Justus. Advance tickets are now on sale at the River of Life Christian Center for $12. Tickets the day of the show are $16. Artist Circle tickets are $16 in advance and $20 the day of the show.

WHERE/WHEN: The Park Square Summer Concert Series will wrap up Aug. 17 at 7 p.m. with the return of the Go Daddies, bringing their range of sounds including rock, dance music and classics.

WHY GO: Their repertoire includes everything from Barry White and Dobie Gray to Pearl Jam and Red Hot Chili Peppers. The concerts are free and open to the general public but all concert-goers are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items with them for Feeding America Tampa Bay.

WHERE/WHEN: Residents can learn how to manage lawns, landscaping and produce during Florida-Friendly Landscaping 101 Saturday, Aug. 18, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Hillsborough County Extension Service, 5339 County Road 579 in Seffner.

WHY GO: The guest speaker, Penny Carnathan, will share her gardening experiences and humor. Lynn Barber, Florida-Friendly Landscaping agent, will kick off this event. The conference also includes a “goodie” bag with resources to take home, snacks and refreshments.

WHERE/WHEN: Brandon Lakes Animal Hospital, 6151 Delancey Station St., in Winthrop Town Centre, Riverview, will host a Yappy Hour Aug. 17 at 6 p.m.

WHY GO: This free event gives dog owners and their pets a chance to socialize.
