GET OUT: Weekend Events Preview Aug. 12-13

With a variety of entertainment venues and restaurants in the area, there's no reason to spend the weekend at home. We've put together a list of fun things to do in the Bloomingdale area.

WHAT/WHERE: The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 75 provides  no-obligation vessel safety inspections for recreational boaters at E.G. Simmons Park in Ruskin on the first and third Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and at Williams Park in Gibsonton the second and fourth Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m..

WHY GO: These inspections take about 15 minutes and are free.

WHAT/WHERE: The Theatre Arts & Dance Alliance, 16711 FishHawk Blvd., Lithia, will present "The Wizard of Oz" Friday, Aug. 12 at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m.

WHY GO: Head on over to the Theatre Arts & Dance Alliance to see a local production of "The Wizard of Oz" and support local arts at the same time.

WHAT/WHERE: The Poetry Group will meet at Barnes & Noble Booksellers, 122 Brandon Town Center Drive, Brandon, Aug. 12 at 7:30 p.m.

WHY GO: Whether you write poetry or just enjoy reading it, come meet with like-minded poetry buffs.

WHAT/WHERE: Calling all budding musicians: The Florida Academy of Performing Arts is holding a free music workshop for ages 2 to 10 at Music Showcase, 402 Oakfield Drive, Brandon, Aug. 13 from 9:30 to 11 a.m.

WHY GO: Children will learn the sounds of the instruments offered for private lessons at Music Showcase.

WHAT/WHERE: Park Square will host the sixth annual Parrot Head Party with The LandSharks Aug. 12 from 7 to 10 p.m.

WHY GO: Join your neighbors for a great time listening to this Jimmy Buffet-style beach band.
