Florida Cowboys Captured in Unusual Video

The last of the Florida cowboys, whose ranches are not that far from the suburbs of Brandon and Riverview, are captured in this most unusual video.

As the Brandon-Bloomingdale areas booms, there are some Old Florida folks determined to preserve Florida's "cowboy culture."

Southwest Florida sometimes feel like it has a heavy dose of mall culture. But close to a third of Hillsborough County is farm land, including cattle ranches, such as E&V Cattle Company LLC of Muck Pond Road in Seffner.

Most suburbanites don't have reason to visit a cattle ranch, but fruit and vegetable farms are, well, a different animal. Here is a list of pick-your-own farms in Hillsborough, with most located in Lithia, Seffner, Riverview and Plant City.

Did you know that Florida cowboys and cattle ranching enjoy a 500-year-history in the state, dating back to Ponce de Leon's discovery of the New World? The first cowboys in the United States were in Florida.

This YouTube video, "The Florida Cowboy," looks at the history of the Florida cowboy, including in southwest Florida. The film visits with real-life cowboys on cattle ranches and also a cracker museum on the state Fairgrounds in Tampa.
