Communities Make Plans for 2013 Relays for Life

Organizers are now signing up teams for the Bloomingdale, Riverview and FishHawk Relays for Life.

They may be months away, but local communities are already hard at work planning the 2013 Relays for Life.

Both the Riverview and FishHawk Relays for Life are scheduled for March 23 at Riverview High School and Newsome High School, respectively.

The Bloomingdale Relay for Life will take place April 5 at Bloomingdale High School.

Organizers of this year's FishHawk Relay for Life hosted a kick-off event Oct. 18. In keeping with this year's movie theme, "Lights, Camera, Action for a Cure," FishHawk Ranch resident Mylene Lee of Cakes by Mylene created a movie camera-shaped cake. This year's event chairwoman is Rebecca Bailey. The relay will begin at noon March 23. There currently are 18 teams signed up. To get involved, contact her at 813-310-6166.

Organizers of the Riverview Relay for Life also are getting a jump on planning the event. They will host a kick-off event today, Oct. 25 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the International Independent Showman's Association, 6915 Riverview Dr., Riverview. Light hors d'oeuvres will be provided. The event is open to anyone interested in getting involved. Currently, 24 teams have signed on to participate. The Bloomingdale Relay for Life, set for April 5-6 from 6 p.m. to noon, has already attracted 23 teams. There will be a kick-off event Monday, Oct. 29 from 6 to 7 p.m. at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, 3315 Bryan Rd., Brandon. Light refreshments will be provided. Relay For Life is a national fundraising project of the American Cancer Society. Teams raise funds to fight cancer and find a cure and then participate in a rally at local high schools where survivors and friends walk around the high school tracks throughout the night in a show of unity. The event also pays tribute to victims of cancer through a luminaria display.
