5 Things to Know Today, Sept. 7

Here's some activities you might want to check out today.

1. The deadline is approaching to sign up for Newsome High School's eighth annual golf tournament.

Join the Newsome High School 2009-10 District 5A championship basketball team as it hosts its annual golf tournament Saturday, Sept. 17 at Bloomingdale Golfers Club, 4113 Great Golfers Place in Bloomingdale East.

The event will begin with breakfast at 7:30 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. This is a scramble format. A varsity player will caddy for each foursome. The tournament includes breakfast, lunch, awards, door prizes, raffles and a silent auction.

Proceeds will benefit the Newsome basketball program, purchasing equipment to compete in spring and summer leagues.

Interested golfers should sign up by Saturday, Sept. 10. The cost to register is $85 per person or $340 for a foursome.

The rain date for the tournament will be Oct. 1.

2. The Fiction Writers’ Group will meet today at 9 a.m. at Barnes & Noble at Westfield Brandon. This is a great opportunity for all writers to perfect their craft.

3. The Brandon chapter of Women on a Mission to Earn a Commission meets for lunch and networking the first and third Wednedays of each month, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Embassy Suites, 10220 Palm River Road, Tampa.

4. Bloomingdale Regional Library, 1906 Bloomingdale Ave., Valrico, and the master gardeners of the Hillsborough County Extension Service will host a program on hummingbirds Sept. 7 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

This lively program is all about the beautiful hummingbirds that make Hillsborough County home. Learn their habits and the plants and feeders that will attract them to your yard.

5. Head on over to the VFW 8018, 7504 Riverview Drive, Riverview, for a hearty, all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner for $6 from 5 to 7 p.m. This event occurs every Wednesday.
