5 Things to Know Today, Sept. 2

Here's some things you might want to know as you go about your day.

1. Visit Riverview’s version of sultry Louisiana for an exciting evening of gambling and jazz. Join Gabrielle Perham, candidate for 2012 honorary mayor of Riverview, at her “Gambling for a Cause” Casino Night at the Winthrop Barn Theatre, 11349 Bloomingdale Ave., Riverview, Friday, Sept. 2 from 7 to 11 p.m. 

Enjoy jazz music, Cajun food, specialty “Casino” drinks, a slot machine auction, balloon raffles and some fun surprises.  The evening will include blackjack, Texas Hold ‘em, craps, a roulette table and slot machines. 

General admission is $15, which includes one drink ticket; $40 gives you admission, one drink ticket and $1,500 in funny money to play.

All proceeds from the event will benefit the Riverview Boys & Girls Club and the Greater Riverview Chamber of Commerce. 

2. The Village Players community theater troupe will present "Assassins" with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim Friday, Sept. 2, Saturday, Sept. 3, Friday, Sept. 9, Saturday, Sept. 10, Friday, Sept. 16 and Saturday, Sept. 17 at 8:15 p.m. at the James McCabe Theatre, 506 Fifth St., Valrico. Greg Summerall is directing the performance. Tickets are $12 general admission, $10 for students and seniors. The play is not recommended for children under 13 years old.

3. Cheer on the Bloomingdale Bulls as they face Chamberlain High School at Chamberlain tonight at 7:30 p.m. Or, if you're a Wolves fan, head on over to Tampa Bay Tech at 7:30 p.m. to see Newsome take on that team. In the meantime, the Riverview Sharks face Spoto at Spoto tonight.

4. Park Square Cellar, 16132 Churchview Drive, Lithia, will host the Jimmy Moore Band from 8 p.m. to midnight.

5. Or head next door to Upstairs, 16144 Churchview Drive, Lithia, for live music from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.
