5 Things to Know Today, Sept. 10

Here's some activities you might want to partidipate in.

1. , 16132 Churchview Drive, Lithia, will host its sixth annual Fall Wine Fest Saturday, Sept. 10, from 1 to 5 p.m., and Sunday, Sept. 11, from 1 to 4 p.m. 

During this free event, residents will be able to sample more than 100 wines plus food samples. Park Square also will offer 15 percent off six bottles or more and Cellar Club members will receive an additional 5 percent off. The Cellar Club now has more than 400 members. There also will be commemorative Park Square Cellar glasses on sale for $15 each or two for $25.

2. The second day of the fourth annual Gallery Hop takes place today, Sept. 10, at 12 venues throughout the greater Brandon area from 1 to 4:30 p.m.

Sponsored by Center Place, the Brandon League of Fine Arts and the Greater Brandon Arts Council, this year’s gallery hop will feature a wide range of fine and performing arts, offering hands-on activities, demonstrations, registration for gift basket drawings and light refreshments at each location.

You can visit one or all of the venues. Venues including , Beaux Arts Gallery, Brandon Ballet, The Laughin' Ladies, Leonard's Academy of Dance, Music Showcase, Orange Home Accessories, Pottery Patch, Sketch and Sip, The Way 2 Dance and The White Rabbit Aniques. Free tickets are available at each location.

A reception will take place Saturday, Sept. 10 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Center Place, 619 Vonderburg Drive, Brandon. At the reception, residents who have visited at least five venues and had their free ticket stamped at each venue will be eligible for the drawing. In addition, there will be a presentation of awards for the Brandon League of Fine Arts Artworks exhibition now taking place at Center Place.

3. American Veterans Post 44 of Brandon will host its fourth annual Remembrance Ride and Patriot Day Observance Saturday, Sept. 10, from noon to 8 p.m. at the International Independent Showmen's Association, 6915 Riverview Dr., Riverview.

A steel beam from the World Trade Center will be on display. There will be bouncy houses and other children’s activities; food vendors selling hamburgers, hotdogs, snow cones, Cuban sandwiches, pizza, cotton candy and beverages for all ages; and a classic and antique car and motorcycle show hosted by the Rolling Thunder Florida Chapter 11 car club.

The highlight of the event will be a remembrance ride featuring an estimated 1,000 to 1,500 motorcyclists. In addition, various first responders will be on hand with displays and equipment. Three bands will entertain the community during the event: the Greg Billings Band, Pitbull Toddler (featuring members of the Cowhead Show on 102.5 FM) and the Diamond Gray Band.

The event also will include a raffle for a big-screen TV with surround sound and a live auction featuring Tampa Bay Lightning and Rays memorabilia and round-trip airline tickets from Southwest Airlines.

4. The Village Players community theater troup will present "Assassins" at The James McCabe Theater, 506 Fifth St., Valrico, Sept. 10, 16 and 17. The show starts at 7:30 and runs to 10:30 p.m.

With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by John Weidman, “Assassins” uses the premise of a murderous carnival game to produce a revue-style portrayal of men and women who attempted (successfully or otherwise) to assassinate United States presidents. The music varies to reflect the popular music of the eras depicted. The musical first opened Off-Broadway in 1990; the 2004 Broadway production won five Tony Awards.

5. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Mounted Posse will host its 2011 series fundraiser horse shows to benefit 4-H going to state competition Sept. 10, Oct. 8, Nov. 12 and Dec. 10 all day at the Hillsborough County Fairgrounds, 4810 State Road 60, Dover.
