5 Things to Know Today, Nov. 24: Dressing Wins!

Here's some things you might want to know as you go about your holiday.

1. In this week's Syrup and Biscuits column, Jackie Garvin asked residents if they prefer stuffing or dressing. Well, the votes are in, and it was close. Of the 29 residents who voted, 15 prefer dressing and 15 stuffing. Whichever you choose, have a great feast.

2. While you're perusing all the advertising fliers featuring sales at national retailers, don't forget to put some local small businesses on your list of places to shop.

3. According to National Geographic, the "real" U.S. Thanksgiving wasn't celebrated in October 1621 in Plymouth Colony. Thanksgiving didn't become a national holiday until the 1800s.

4. About 46 million turkeys will end up on dinner tables this Thanksgiving, according to the National Turkey Federation. Minnesota is the top turkey-producing state.

5. Like turkeys, cranberries are native to the United States. Top producers are Wisconsin and Massachusetts. Farmers will produce 750 million pounds of cranberries this year.
