5 Things to Know Today, May 6

Here's some things you might want to know as you go about your day.

1. Make plans to attend the Bloomingdale High School Student vs. Faculty Basketball Showdown tonight at 7 p.m. at the high school. Sponsored byBeef ‘O’ Brady’s , tickets to the showdown are $5 and 100 percent of the proceeds will go toward Lyrics for Life, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to make a difference in the fight against pediatric cancer. 

There will be drawings for a Tony Dungy autographed football and Sister Hazel signed CDs.

The students were victorious in 2010 after defeating their teachers in double-overtime. Last year's showdown raised more than $1,300 for Lyrics for Life in 2010. 
  
Lyrics For Life is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded by Sister Hazel front man Ken Block in memory of his younger brother, Jeffrey, who ultimately lost his four-year battle with cancer.

2. The Republican Club of FishHawk will meet at 6:30 p.m. for Movie Night at Beef's. The movie will be "Waiting for Superman." Come learn how our education system is failing our kids. Contact Chris Shalosky, shaloskyc@hotmail.com, 813-857-6973, for further details.

3. The "Three Little Pigs" invade Center Place, 619 Vonderburg Drive, Brandon, today when Stages Production brings the children's fairytale to life at 11:45 a.m. and 7 p.m. This original musical for children explores the flaws of the human nature.

4. Asana Yoga of Brandon is offering a traditional hath yoga class Fridays from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at FishHawk's Osprey Club located at 5721 Osprey Ridge Drive in Lithia. You do not need to live in FishHawk Ranch to participate in these classes. Preregistration is required.

5. Reserve your table for tomorrow's Spring Coffee. The Greater Brandon Community Foundation will host its fourth annual Spring Coffee fundraiser to raise money and awareness for the Foundation Angel Program, Residents and businesses are invited to sponsor a table of eight and each guest is asked to bring a gift card for $25 to be distributed to Brandon area families in need. To date, Foundation Angels have helped more than 100 families facing emergency situations. The Spring Coffee will take place at Bell Shoals Baptist Church, 2102 Bell Shoals Road, Brandon, May 7  from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. To reserve a table, call 813-689-6889.
