5 Things to Know Today, June 11

Here's some things you might want to know as you go about your day.

1. Stop by the Hillsborough County Extension Service today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m for free family-friendly hands-on activities and exhibits, make-and-take home projects, presentations and garden tours.

Hillsborough County Extension, a cooperative service between the county and the University of Florida, is hosting an open house today at its main office, 5339 County Road 579 in Seffner.

2. To help residents get ready for hurricane season, St. Stephen Catholic Church, 5049 Bell Shoals Road, Valrico, is hosting a hurricane preparedness workshop Saturday, June 11 from 10 a.m. to noon.

The presenter will be Scott Dunlap, chief of administration for Hillsborough County Emergency Management.

Dunlap will cover topics ranging from evaculation plans and local shelter to what supplies you need to prepare for a hurricane and what resources are available after a hurricane strikes.

3, The Showcase Players of the Florida Academy of Performing Arts will present "Jekyll & Hyde" on stage today at 2 and 7 p.m. at The Regent,6437 Watson Road, Riverview.

Through special arrangements with Music Theatre International, FAOPA will present "Jekyll & Hyde," the tale of the classic battle between good and evil.

"Jekyll & Hyde" is based on the story by Robert Louis Stevenson. Under the direction of Miguel Oquendo, the Showcase Players are a beginning musical theatre class for teens ages 13 and up. 

Tickets are $10 general admission and $8 for students, seniors and military.

4, Katrina's School of Dance, 3339 Lithia-Pinecrest Road, Valrico, will hold its 2011 recital, "Rhythm of Life," Saturday, June 11 at 7 p.m. at Durant High School, 4748 Cougar Path, Plant City. 5. The FishHawk Republicans will host a Reagan '80s Party June 11 at Park Square Cellar,  16132 Churchview Drive, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. The FishHawk Republicans invites fellow Republicans to celebrate a great Republican and a great decade. Join the party as the Republicans set the stage for 2012 and the National Convention coming to Tampa. There will be a Reagan costume contest, trivia and moonwalk contest.

Elected representatives have been invited to attend.
