5 Things to Know Today, April 17

Here's some things you might want to know as you go about your day.

1. Today is Palm Sunday, which always falls on the Sunday before Easter. The feast commemorates Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem as mentioned in the Gospels of Mark, Matthew, Luke and John. In many Christian churches, this day is marked by the distribution of palm leaves to assembled worshippers, representing the palm fronds the people of Jerusalem waved at Jesus as he entered the city.

2. If you're a golfer, you might want to make plans to participate in the 10th annual LifeCare of Brandon golf tournament tomorrow at River Hills Country Club, 3943 New River Hills Parkway,Valrico. The event will raise funds for LifeCare's Haven of Hope, a home for women with unplanned pregnancies. The event will kick off at 11 a.m. with lunch provided by Chick-fil-A at Lake Brandon Village. Ping will provide club fittings and demonstrations. The tournament is set to begin at 12:30 p.m. Dinner by First Choice BBQ and prizes will follow at 5:30 p.m. The cost is $125 per player. 3. The 2011 Bay Area Renaissance Festival continues its theme weekends with "Huzzah to the King!" celebrating King Henry's birthday.

Guests will take part in an array of contests, along with complimentary beer tastings, fencing lessons and shopping at the Renaissance Festival's Harvest Market.

4. It's the perfect day to visit Westfield Brandon mall with the kids to see the Easter Bunny. The bunny is taking post at Macy's Plaza today from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Families can have their photos taken with him, with a variety of photo packages offered.

5. If you haven't already signed up for the Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation summer camp program, the deadline is fast approaching.

Hillsborough County’s 2011 Max Out Summer Camp, scheduled June 13 through Aug. 19, offers a supervised playground program, games, arts and crafts, sports, and more at 33 locations for ages 5 to 15. The camp will be open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
 
Parents currently enrolled in the Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department’s after-school program must register on April 18 or 19 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. to reserve a spot in the summer program. Those not currently enrolled must register on April 20 or 21, between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Registration must be completed at the recreation center where their child will be attending summer camp.
 
Cost for the entire summer program is $480, and discounts are available based on income. To be considered for program discounts, applications must include the first page of their 1040 federal income tax form for 2010.
