5 Things to Know Today, April 11

Here's some things you might want to know as you go about your day.

1. It's going to be another hot and humid day. Bloomingdale Patch's current temperature is 66 degrees but it's expected to reach 90 degrees by this afternoon.

2. April 19 is hiring day at McDonald's. McDonald’s and its franchisees are looking to hire up to 50,000 new employees at all levels. Visit www.mcdonalds.com for information.

3. The April 15 deadline for filing your taxes is fast approaching. If you need help, there is free tax preparation available today to those who earned less than $50,000 in 2010.

  • Prosperity Campaign IRS-certified preparers and trained volunteers are available at convenient sites throughout Hillsborough County to help residents complete the paperwork and electronically file their tax returns.

    In addition, residents will be assisted in applying for the earned income tax credit, child tax credit, and other tax credits for which they are eligible. This year, qualified taxpayers can receive up to $5,666 in earned income tax credit.

    The Prosperity Campaign of Hillsborough County represents a coalition of public, private and nonprofit partners working together toward the shared goal of helping our county's most financially vulnerable families succeed.

    Hillsborough County and the United Way of Tampa Bay engage in outreach efforts to promote the earned income tax credit and other valuable tax benefits, provide free tax filing services through multiple locations, and offer financial education and coaching to empower families to better understand their options when it comes to spending, saving and borrowing.

    The goal is to help families build assets, use credit wisely, and ultimately achieve financial stability.

    Sites include Brandon Family Support and Resource Center1277 Kingsway Road in Brandon, Mondays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

    4. Hillsborough County Schools Superintendent MaryEllen Elia will be the guest speaker at the Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce Educational Update Luncheon Monday, April 11 at noon. The event will take place at the Brandon/Tampa Embassy Suites, 10220 Palm River Road, Tampa. She will discuss current issues relating to eeducation including innovative educational programs, local test scores, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's Empowering Teachers Grant and the governor's transition team.

    Registration is $18 for chamber members, $23 for nonmembers.

    5. Bring your appetites to the Copper Bell Cafe today. Melissa Snively, chairman of the Greater Brandon Chamber of Commerce will be Cooking for a Cause at the Copper Bell Cafe, 401 S. Parsons Ave., Brandon, April 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cooking for a cause brings community leaders to the Copper Bell Cafe to cook for charity. All proceeds and gratuities from the entire day will be donated to the Brandon Outreach Clinic.  
     
    Snively will be making Chicken Pot Pie, a flaky pastry shell stuffed with tender chicken and a fresh vegetable creamy mixture and topped with housemade mashed potatoes. It will be served with the signature cafe salad and a dinner roll for $10
