Having fun doesn't need to break the bank, especially for families on a budget. Here are five things to do locally this week that either are free on affordable. Plus you can save money on gas by sticking close to home!
1.) Learn to Make Chinese Food: Take-out Chinese can be delicious, but expensive and often not so healthy. Rowena Sjovall, of No Fuss Foods, will hold a demonstration Tuesday at 6 p.m. She will show how to make budget-friendly Chinese food at home. Free tasting samples will be available. The demo will take place at the Bloomingdale Regional Library, 1906 Bloomingdale Ave., Valrico.
2.) Riverview Idol! Peel the kids away from the TV or PC and watch "The Riverview Idol," who will be chosen from the top five contestants in an all-star finale beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Riverview High School. Jeremy Rosado of Valrico, from the Top 12 of Season 11 of American Idol will be the special guest judge.
3.) Spellbinding Godspell: The Village Players of Brandon are performing the popular 1970s musical. Godspell runs through March 23 at the James McCabe Theater, 506 Fifth St. Valrico. Tickets are $12 general admission, $10 students/seniors/military.
4.) Winthrop Fine Arts Festival: Enjoy the work of 100 artists, along with music, food, even a beer stand. The artists' work for this fifth-annual festival includes media from paintings, to ceramics, to jewelry. The show takes place in Winthrop Town Center, at the corner of Bloomingdale & Providence Rd, Riverview. The show runs Saturday and Sunday, beginning at 10 a.m. each day.
5.) Teen Talent Show: Local teens will compete for cash prizes by showing off their skills in singing, dancing, comedy, music and more during a free Teen Talent Show. The show begins at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Bloomingdale Regional Library, 1906 Bloomingdale Ave., Valrico,
