15th Annual FishHawk Road Race to Benefit Schools

FishHawk Ranch's annual road race has raised thousands for local schools in the past.

The 15th Annual FishHawk Ranch Road Race is expected to grow again this year as runners traverse a mixture of roads and scenic paved trails.

The event, set to take place on Feb. 18, will include a 5K, 10K and children's race, all benefiting six local elementary, middle and high schools. Last year, each of the schools received the a check for $3,000 to spend as they wished. Organizers are hoping this year's race will exceed the nearly 1,000 participants who ran last year, increasing the amount they are able to give to the schools.

"When it started 15 years ago, two community schools received the donations," race organizer Lynda McMorrow said. "Now we're up to six schools, and in addition, the FishHawk Ranch Road Runners receive a portion of the proceeds for their scholarship fund. The number of runners seems to increase each year, so we are looking forward to growth again this year."

"It's probably my favorite event in FishHawk Ranch," McMorrow said. "I love how the community, our builders, vendors and runners from the surrounding area come together to make the race successful. The race draws all types of participants from seasoned runners, to families who have made it a tradition to run the race together, to groups of teachers who walk with their students. It's just a great community event."

Runners will start to gather in Park Square around 7 a.m. and continue to arrive right up until race time. The 5K and 10K races are chip timed and start at 8 a.m. with a cost of $25 with pre-registration or $30 on the day of the race. The kids race starts at 9 a.m. and will cost $15.

There will also be a post-race party where runners can enjoy food and drinks. Awards are given to the best overall male and female finishers in the 5K and 10K as well as to the top three finishers in each age group. All kids race participants receive a medal. There will also be music and raffle prizes given away during the race. For more information visit fishhawkranch.com or call 813-685-7500. There are volunteer and sponsorship opportunities available.
