Now that the election is over and cooler weather has arrived (well, all right, it is in the 80s right now – sadly), we can turn our thoughts to the upcoming holiday season.
This is my favorite time of year; I love the cooler days, the holiday spirit that prevails wherever I venture, and the opportunity to wish everyone I see the best of wishes for Thanksgiving and the Christmas season.
Along with the holiday activities, the cultural activities in the area are on the upswing. You can enjoy music, theater, dancing and visual arts at every turn. And you can never go wrong by giving a gift of art – a painting, theater tickets. etc.
Although the Greater Brandon Arts Council has no events planned for the next several months, we are definitely scheduling for next year! In February we are sponsoring a seminar on the law for artists of all kinds. The presentation will focus on copyright law, licensing and contracts, Internet use and other related topics. It will be Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Bloomingdale Regional Library Community Room from 1-4 p.m. Anne Dalton, a lawyer from Fort Myers, will be the presenter and questions from the audience will be answered. Donations can be made for this event at the door. Refreshments will be served.
We are excited about this event and know there are many artists out there who have questions related to this topic. Put the date on your calendar now!
We also plan to have the gallery hop, “Find the Hidden Treasures of Brandon," in conjunction with the Brandon League of Fine Art Artworks exhibition at Center Place. Information about this event to follow in January! This is sponsored by Center Place, the Brandon League of Fine Arts and GBAC.
In November 2013 we are hoping to have a big community art event, the name as yet undecided, with hands-on events. make-it, take-it activities, and the opportunity for the public to sample the art available in our community. This event will be in conjunction with the BLFA indoor Artfest and the Center Place Chalk Walk. We hope to draw a large crowd to enjoy these combined events and to support the arts here. Further information to follow.
As usual, membership in the arts council is available year round. Go to the website, www.brandonarts.org, for the schedule of member and organization costs. There are opportunities for sponsorship and corporate memberships.
Do not miss the event at Plaza Bella on Nov. 16 from 2 to 9 p.m. Many activities are planned around a British theme, with fish and chips available for supper!
On Dec. 20 from 6 to 10 p.m., there will be a Holiday Charity Ball at The Regent to benefit Toys for Tots. Contact Tatyana at the www.theway2dance.com for more details.
Finally, I want to wish everyone the very best of Thanksgivings! Enjoy the happy family gatherings, the bountiful tables and the spirit of the season!
