Florida Friendly Produce - The Duncan Grapefruit

Tis' the Season for Florida Citrus

This is such a wonderful time of year not only for the holidays but for our local produce as well.  Florida's citrus season is in full bloom.  Over the past few weeks we've had varieties of citrus ranging from Hamlin Oranges to Fall Glo Tangerines.  Well this week we have a special treat.  Locally and organically grown Duncan Grapefruit from My Mother's Garden, Wimauma.

Duncan Grapefruit are an old Florida native known as the "original" grapefruit.  They have a white flesh, are 'seedy', and great for those who like a real grapefruit flavor.  Susan with My Mother's Garden shared the following recipe with us:  Mix 1 part pomegranate molasses with 2 parts grenadine add to grapefruit sections, juice, and enjoy!

Grapefruit are a great source of vitamin C; perfect for helping to fight any flu like symptoms that might sneak up this time of year.  Vitamin C is also associated with reduced inflammatory conditions, such as asthma, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis.  With each grapefruit offering nearly 73% of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin C it's hard to go wrong snacking on these Florida fruits.    Source: whfoods.com
