COOLEY LAW SCHOOL’S TAMPA BAY CAMPUS TO PARTNER WITH UNITED WAY TO OFFER FREE TAX PREPARATION SERVICES

Thomas M. Cooley Law School’s Tampa Bay campus has partnered with the United Way Suncoast to offer free tax assistance through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program.  Through this program, participating Cooley students will assist qualified individuals (those who make $51,000.00 or less) with preparing and filing their taxes free of charge.

“In its continued mission to serve the communities in which it resides, Cooley Law School’s Tampa Bay campus has entered into this partnership with the United Way Suncoast,” said Amy Bandow, assistant director of the Center for Ethics, Service, and Professionalism at the Tampa Bay campus.  “Service is an important part of a Cooley education and the students are very excited to provide assistance to those who might otherwise not have the resources to prepare and file their own taxes.” 

Students participating in the program will attend an information session on Friday, January 25 at noon at Cooley’s Tampa Bay Campus.  The session will be conducted by the community manager of the United Way Suncoast.  The students will also undergo extensive training to become IRS certified tax preparers.  They will then volunteer at VITA United Way sites throughout Hillsborough and Pinellas counties for the duration of the tax season.  Individuals interested in taking advantage of the assistance program can do so by visiting one of the VITA United Way sites or contacting their local United Way office.
