The June art exhibit at the Mook Gallery at Center Place, 619 Vonderburg Dr., Brandon, will feature the work of James McCarthy June 1-27.
"I like to draw and paint spontaneous organic imagery," said McCarthy. "In Surrealism, this is known as biomorphism. However, depicting the landscape, along with its weather and seasons is very important to me from an emotional perspective."
McCarthy, originally from Kalamazoo, Mich., said he's also influenced by music and childhood memories of snow and ice in winter.
"There are even places around my neighborhood in Brandon I use as inspiration for my landscapes, which I then embellish," he said. "Also, I am enamored by the images I see of gardens and ruins from around the world and especially those of the British Isles, with their fairytale rolling hills and hedgerows."
Residents are invited to meet the artist at a reception Thursday, June 14, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
