Let the Sun Shine In

I attended the open public meeting at the Regent Center.  I had previously attended another Regent Board meeting.  The Regent’s Board again kept repeating their mantra of “Brandon deserves a nice place.”  Yes, Brandon deserves a nice place but so does Lutz, Keystone, Seffner, Dover, Balm, etc.  Nor does a “nice place” mean that the Regent Board has an open check book to spend as they wish at the expense of all the taxpayers of Hillsborough County.  Adding insult to injury, the Regent Center building was built totally on the taxpayer’s dime without any private funding yet they are now running a private business at the Regent’s Center and refuses to address what they will do with the profits generated other than saying that they have to have a four month of expenses banked.  The board refuses to allow the public to see their books and records.  I am involved in a non-profit.  We are proud of what we do and advertise it.  If someone wants to see the records, all they need to do is ask.  When someone refuses to answer questions or provide documents, the feeling is that they are hiding something.  So what is the Regent Center hiding?  If nothing, prove us wrong.  Publish your books and records.  Let the Sun Shine In.

Is the Regent the best value for our $7M??? Is it accessible to the average citizen who wants to find a place for a community meeting but doesn't have funding to pay for a private catering hall? Are some groups getting free access to the Regent based on their political connections while others pay pricey fees? These are the questions that need to be answered but the non-profit that sits as the gatekeeper to our facility won't answer those questions and says that it's no one's business who gets in for free or what they do with the profit from high-end parties. Oh really? It's none of our business??? Something tells me that the $7M we paid to build it automatically makes it our business!!!

With each passing day your arguments fall of fewer and fewer ears. I certainly hope this is not the crux of Ms. Belchers political arguments. Because she needs to learn the no one cares!

This place is a total boondoggle that WE paid for. Built as a palace that people can hire at a hefty fee for fancy weddings and stuff! While the taxpayers have to peek in the windows? Does not compute. The only thing that can make this right at this point is to open it to public use...free or for a nominal charge, enough to pay its operating costs. And NO highly paid staff! Stop the BS! And open the books, of course. for anyone who wants to see them.

Hey Marcella --- have you actually ever set foot in the building OR spoken with the staff?
