Whiz Kid: Mackenzie Anderson

The fourth-grader won all-county in the 4H/Tropicana Public Speaking Contest.

WHO: Mackenzie Anderson, a fourth-grader at FishHawk Creek Elementary School.

ACCOMPLISHMENT: Mackenzie won all-county in the 4H/Tropicana Public Speaking Contest. She competed against 194 at FishHawk Elementary and went on to compete against all of the students in Area 6, ultimately winning the competition for the fourth-grade. There are 14,756 fourth-grade students in Hillsborough County. Her topic was "Being Small."

DETAILS: Working with youth in grades four to six, this contest helps thousands of young people annually learn how to write and deliver a speech. More than 150,000 young people in more than 50 Florida counties in grades four to six participate in the contest on an annual basis.

Tropicana has sponsored the contest since 1969 and provides classroom materials for teachers, certificates of participation, medallions for school winners, trophies for county winners, summer camp scholarships and Tropicana orange juice refreshments for county contests. Close to two million students have participated in this program since its beginning.
