St. Vincent de Paul Welcomes New President

Kathie Huff will lead the ministry of St. Stephen Catholic Church, which provides assistance to families in need.

Retired school teacher Kathie Huff assumed the presidency of the St. Stephen Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Oct. 1.

Huff will lead the local not-for-profit group of more than 45 volunteers that offer tangible assistance to those in need on a person-to-person basis.

Camille Riggins served as president for the past six years. During that time, the group witnessed a significant increase in the number of families in need of assistance. Working closely with Food Pantry coordinator Graciela Langan, Riggins and the St. Vincent de Paul volunteers now serve approximately 200 families per month. Donations, fundraising and gifts-in-kind from area stores provide the majority of resources for this group, which is part of an international service organization.

Volunteers transport donated items from local retailers, pack nonperishable items for distribution and make in-home visitations.

Food is distributed to registered participants (individuals or families living in or near the Lithia. Boyette, Riverview and Gibsonton areas) once per month each Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at St. Stephen Catholic Church, 5049 Bell Shoals Rd., between Bloomingdale Avenue and FishHawk Blvd.

Financial assistance is provided to those in need for rent, mortgage, utilities or other living expenses.
