If You Don't Like Mad House Sandwich Shop's Food, Then Go Somewhere Else
A new restaurant offers a variety of sandwiches and unique approach to customer service.
Mad House Sandwich Shop owner Gino Sierra isn't the least bit humble about his food.
"I make the best sandwiches around," declared Sierra.
The former owner of the Mr. Empanada franchise at 10312 Bloomingdale Ave., Suite 111, Riverview, for five years, Sierra gave up the franchise to start his own restaurant in the same location.
The new restaurant features selections such as pork Sierra roasts himself, ham baked right at the restaurant and homemade meatballs with marinara sauce, Sierra's own recipe.
"Everything is handmade, from the ham on the Cubans to the best deviled crab in the state made with 100 percent real crab meat," said Sierra. "Our goal is to give our customers great food at great prices."
The bread is made fresh daily at Casino Bakery and Sierra uses all produce grown by local farmers.
"If I had the space, I'd make my own cheese, too," he said.
His most popular sandwich is the Continental, a triple decker sandwich on pumpernickle bread containing ham, salami, roast beef, mozzarella and Swiss cheese that is butter pressed and then quartered.
"It's big enough for two people," said Sierra.
But what truly sets Mad House Sandwich Shop apart is Sierra's unique take on customer service.
"Here, the customer is not always right. We are," he said. "I make a great sandwich and I don't allow any substitutions. I can get snarky, and sometimes downright rude about it. If the customer doesn't like it, he can go somewhere else."
Opened last month, the new restaurant seats 28 people. Sierra is in the process of obtaining his wine and beer license and plans to serve Cigar City Brewing of Tampa products along with wine and sangria.
Mad House Sandwich Shop offers carryout as well as delivery through TakeOut Butler.

On a recent visit, I had the Continental. I thought it was really good. It is a big sandwich and I ate the entire thing. In my defense, I was really hungry.

The sign looks ridiculous. I think I'll "go somewhere else". Sounds like he was grumpy about mr. Empanada doing so bad so he made a little place he could be grumpy at all day long. Wah.

Gino! I don't know how good your sandwiches are, but damn man, I do like your attitude! I hope your business does well.

Gino, Your attitude is horrible & your language is atrocious. I was looking forward to trying your sandwiches but after reading your post, I too will go elsewhere. There are plenty of places to get good sandwiches around here where the business owners have good attitudes & wouldn't use that language on what I thought was a family oriented site. Shame on you! I can't believe the Patch would allow that post to stay posted.

Good. We don't want your kind here anyway...Go to those other places and enjoy processed, sodium and water filled cold cut sandwiches on day old bread sweetheart..When you get the unintentionally bad service and or the inevitable bad food from the faceless corporate sandwich shop you go to, see if they give a rat's ass about your complaint - or your opinion - like I do.

Seems like someone is setting themselves up for a bankruptcy...if the pictures of the meatless sandwiches were supposed to impress anyone you failed,a giant piece of bread with less than a 1/4 pound of meat and 2 thin slices of cheese is very subway like and disrespecting women on message boards and in your soon to be shuttered store is a great business move...sweetheart

In fairness to Gino, she fired the first shot. I'm not quite clear how Gino disrespected "women" other then use of the term "sweetheart," which says more about the uber-sensitivity of the recipient than anything else. It's obvious that she never had any intention of visiting his shop. She was merely performing her impression of Babs in the movie National Lampoon's Animal House, who, when referring to John Belushi's character Bluto just before the start of the cafeteria food fight scene, said, "That boy is a P - I - G pig!" She had the option of just leaving the article without comment.

If you dont think ending a sentence by calling a woman sweetheart is condescending it is a reflection of you and how you perceive women, and calling someone a dipshit and a douche bag because of an opinion is firing the first shot at anyone who read the article. The blatant disrespect for customers or potential future customers is a poor business move and will repel far more customers than it will attract

It's not a word I would use when talking to a woman I didn't know but again she had to get her opinion in and if you're going to take a shot at someone you have to expect return fire. As far as dipshits and douchebags, I agree with Gino. The guy was a dipshit and douchebag and there is no shortage of them in the Bloomingdale area. Besides on both sides of this arguments are opinions which are just like assholes - everyone has one and they all stink (except for yours, of course). Just think of Gino as the Sandwich Nazi a la the Soup Nazi of Seinfeld fame. Maybe it will work for him. I hope it does. I think that it is quite refreshing - particularly during this political silly season where every bucket of slime who considers him/herself worthy of election and will say anything to anybody to promote it - to have someone tell all these precious dears like those complaining to Gino that they're really not special at all.

First, Thank You Pete. You're obviously a real man who respects not only woman but everyone & their right to comment.
George: Your right about opinions....funny how you expressed yours before mine yet I should "leave the article" & stay quiet. Last time I looked this was America & freedom of speech is one of our privileges. You formed an opinion of me saying I was like Babs. It wasn't the language that bothered me so much (believe me I've heard worse) but the fact that rather be a decent individual & business owner & ignore the comment, he got extremely rude & hostile. Not a good way to run a business. It's one thing to have attitude and another being a prick.

Contrary to your statement that I had no intention of going...I had every intention because when I read the article like you I thought it was a good approach to not put up with whining & pettiness that some customers tend to exibit but after reading his comment, I changed my mind. I can't believe you find it "refreshing". I would never tolerate being verbally abused let alone pay for it! To verbally abuse ANYONE is disgusting....especially if your trying to run a business. What's your stake in this George? Do you know either of them? I was never one to stand idly by while people get abused.

Apparently, the Mr Empanada franchise didn't like his" kind" & that's why he needed to leave it. Attitude is everything but his is piss poor & a bit extreme. He seems to be going out of his way to be a belligerent jackass. BTW: the soup Nazi on Seinfeld is TV....not reality & even he didn't shout obscenities at people.
Gino: not even worth any further comment.

Ms Surrusco, I don't know any of you people nor is it something to which I aspire. I'm only involved in this for the entertainment value. I'm forced to ask, "Why are you taking this so seriously?" Yes, the Soup Nazi is TV and this is the Internet - the only difference is the medium.
The way I see this rplot playing out is Damien (Satan's spawn?) complains to Gino and tells him that he doesn't like Gino's sign and that he is going elsewhere to buy a sandwich. Gino responds in somewhat colorful language that Damien is free to do so. I made a comment that I liked Gino's attitude and appreciated that he ran his business as he saw fit. (to be continued)

At this point, you jumped in already knowing that Gino had used what you consider abusive language to Damien and complained that he did so, saying that you didn't think Patch should allow his response to Damien to stand. So please spare me your freedom of speech diatribe. If you want sympathy, you can find it in the dictionary between "shit" and "syphilis."
Now in jumps Pete "Don Quixote" Konovitch riding to the rescue of his fair "Dulcinea" (you).
After a brief exchange between myself and the Man from LaMancha, you again jump into the fray offering the Don his most heavenly reward, the thanks of his fair Dulcinea, and excoriating me for my professed approval of Gino's bad boy behavior.
Did I miss anything?
To end our evening's entertainment, I close with the immortal admonition of the great Sergeant Hulka: "Lighten up, Francis!"

Hi everyone.
I had to spike a few of the more "colorful" comments from this thread. Given the context of the article and Gino's new business model, some outspoken commentary is to be expected. Have fun and please keep it clean.

Thank You Gino! I've been told I have a "sweet" rack! And your welcome for my explanation of Seinfeld. I figured it was above your intelligence. Usually I don't have a battle of wits with an unarmed man but I'll make an exception for you. One last comment since I won't be reading this nonsense anymore....I look forward to your sad little hole in the wall closing. Karma's a bitch & she's going to bite you in your fat ass!

Always remember this kids: Just when they think they've got the answers, I change the questions. If I've always believed in the propaganda of the lawn mowing penguins, I wouldn't be much of a calendar salesman, would I? This is love and friendship at it's finest. Radio Flyer.

Mr. Sierra,
It appears too many people on this planet support the "entitlement gene". You are a smart businessman who seems to possess a unique idea of reality. A sense of a needed shakeup. Get over yourselves people. Smile and go have a great sandwich. This gentleman runs a business with a sense of humor, who also hopes to support other independent businessess, by buying goods locally. Thank You Sir. John

I wish I could go to this place, but I did walk in once. And walked right out. I don't need to be yelled What the Eff do you want lady, ever to me. I like the concept and don't mind even being rude to customers/No Subs/Etc, but insulting and yelling the eff bomb in my face is uncalled for.
