Brandon Junior Woman's Club Seeks Would-Be Eagle Scouts

The club is seeking Scouts who would like to take on the clubhouse for their Eagle Scout projects.

The GFWC Brandon Junior Woman’s Club is seeking the help of future Eagle Scouts looking for Eagle Scout projects to help spruce up its clubhouse.

Built in 1928, the Brandon Junior Woman’s Club clubhouse, 129 N. Moon Ave., Brandon is one of 26 Hillsborough County historical landmarks.

The bungalow has a long history in the community. In addition to being the original clubhouse for the Brandon Woman's Club, it served as a makeshift infirmary where children in the community received their first vaccinations. In addition, it was Brandon's first lending library in the early 1960s.

However, time has taken its toll on the building and it is desperately in need of renovation and improvements.

With the club’s 501(c)3 tax-exempt status, all money raised by the Junior Woman's Club is put back in the community in the form of scholarships for high school senior girls who volunteer in the community, a craft night for residents at the New Horizons Group Home, school supplies for Kenly Elementary School and providing Christmas for 80-plus underprivileged children.

Upkeep for the clubhouse comes from rental fees. The clubhouse is rented to individuals and organizations for meetings, baby showers, bridal showers and birthday parties. Those fees go toward electric and water bills, mowing, repair and maintenance, rewire electrical, and insurance.  In addition, the club has a major expense on the horizon. The clubhouse has a roof leak in the bathroom and is in need of a new roof.

Would-be Eagle Scouts could help by completing their community projects at the clubhouse.  The clubhouse is in need of a new ramp in the back, a holder for the chairs instead of leaning the chairs against the wall when not in use, landscaping for the back yard, a new or repainted flag pole, etc...
