Boyette Springs Residents Object to Nearby Land Use Amendment

A proposal has been filed with Hillsborough County to allow the parking and servicing of carnival equipment along Balm-Riverview and Rhodine roads.

Boyette Springs homeowners are preparing to fight a rezoning proposal that would allow the parking and serving of carnival equipment along the east side of Balm-Riverview Road and north and south of Rhodine Road.

The Tropical Acres Show Business Group, a group of more than 25 landowners represented by Richard Bennett, wants to rezone their parcels totaling 46 acres. The rezoning request is scheduled to go before the Hillsborough County Zoning Hearing Master Oct. 17.

In the meantime, Boyette Springs resident Dave Kulow is urging fellow residents to fight the rezoning request.

"This is within a very short distance of my residence," said Kulow in a letter to the county. "I would like to express my absolute objection to this rezoning application. I feel that there is ample space in Gibsonton, which is already zoned for this type of equipment storage and maintenance, and am concerned that rezoning the Riverview area for a Show Business Overlay would cause my property value to decrease in an already-difficult financial time."

Kulow is also concerned about the impact of machinery maintenance to the area's environmental areas, especially surface water runoff.

"Further, the rezoning of this portion of Riverview does not conform to the approved Riverview Community Plan," he added.

The properties is currently designated agricultural/single family.
